Air pollution increases DVT risk

Air pollution increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) -- dangerous blood clots in the veins -- even at pollution levels the EPA deems "acceptable."

Harvard researcher Andrea Baccarelli, MD, PhD, and colleagues in Italy studied 870 people diagnosed with DVT from 1995 to 2005. They compared their particulate air pollution exposure in the year before their diagnosis to that of 1,210 matched people without DVT.

They found that DVT risk goes up 70% for every 10 microgram-per-cubic-meterrise in particulate air pollution above 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air (the lowest pollution level measured in the study).....

Air pollution affects the heart and blood vessels even more than the lungs, notes Robert D. Brook, MD, a University of Michigan expert on the cardiovascular effects of air pollution. An editorial by Brook accompanies the Baccarelli report in the May 12 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Vomiting air

Someone wake me up from this #@!$@!&%$$ nightmare... I'm sick of this. I feel like my coughing is exactly like I am vomiting with uncontrollable involuntary strong muscle actions in my stomach except nothing actually comes out except air, or a trickle of saliva. The more I cough, the worse I feel and the more my body wants to cough. My back hurts. The cough is supposed to be helpful but it's not. All it does is shut off my airways even more. Couldn't sleep last night due to stupid coughing and tried to prop myself up so I was sitting upright but then my neck really started hurting. Although I slept a good 8-9 hours I feel like I've only slept 2.

Even though I technically don't have asthma right now I feel great relief when I use my puffer. Of course this relief is very short-lasting.

Apparently there is nothing really you can do for bronchitis other than get rest and take fluids, blah blah blah. The usual. I did find this homeopathic site interesting except I don't know what any of the ingredients are LOL.

Sick :(

I guess it had to happen sooner or later. Just yesterday I was marveling at how long it'd been since I was last sick.. June, July? Not long after I first arrived in Shanghai I got sick 2 or 3 times in rapid succession. Now, I had survived all these months not getting sick, including not catching it off hubby when he was sick in Japan and now.. ARRGGHH!! I HATE BEING SICK!! It takes me an absolute minimum one week to feel normal again, usually two, and sometimes longer. It also sux cos I'm asthmatic. Jeepers, I'm pissed off. This darn cold weather aint helping things either. I either freeze in the apartment or have the heater on and it feels so stuffy and start to feel headachey from having no air in here. I am also annoyed cos hubby and I planned to have a nice romantic dinner in a restaurant which we really haven't done (with just the two of us) since... gosh... September? Hmm... hopefully I'll still be up for it tonight but right now my throat is absolutely burning and my face feels hot but my body feels cold (despite wearing 5 layers). DARN DIDDLY ARN DARN CRAP! (as Ned Flanders would say).

Well, yesterday my amazing landlord was at it again.

He called me to say he'd be over to pick up the water bill and pay it for me. I didn't even know it had arrived in the mail but lo and behold - there it was. He went and paid it then came back with the receipt and collected the money off me. I even wanted to round it up but he wouldn't accept even a cent more.

While he was here I told him the air conditioner was not behaving and he called someone to come and fix it. Within 10 minutes someone was here to fix the air conditioner and now it's working great. So great it feels a lot colder and stronger than before. I had it on 18-19º before but now it's on 21-22º.

I am still sick. I think I am getting better but my insomnia is really taking a toll on things. I just can't fall asleep so I'm getting maybe 3-4 hours a night for the past 3-4 nights. ARGH!

Sick of being sick!

Just when I was starting to enjoy my time in Shanghai and only 1 month after I was sick, I am sick. Again. UGH. On top of that the air conditioning in our living room does not seem to be working properly and I'm sweating! Just fan-bloody-tastic.
